What's Your Superpower?
I usually like to say that I wear many hats, which I do, but it finally dawned on me today that when the cogs truly hit the wheel, there’s just one thing that I can confidently say “I’m a master at this”.
You see for multipational (people with many occupations, learned this from Seth Godin) people like myself, the question “What do you do?” can be very daunting. Should I say that I’m a Storyteller, or a Content Creator, or a Business Analyst, or a Video Editor, or a Writer, or a Gem Expert, or a Social Media Manager, or a Researcher, or a Graphic Designer? If I, depending on the setting, say that I do just one of these, then it feels like I’m describing only a small part of myself. And if I say that I do all of them, then it sounds like I am Jack The Rolling Stone. All trades and no moss.
So because of this, I have dreaded that what do you do question, ever since leaving the corporate world three years ago. That is, until today, when I finally realized the one thing I can do comfortably in my sleep, also known as my superpower. And this is how I came to that realization.
Think about it like this — you have a gun to your head, or you’ve been kidnapped. Or you have only one shot at winning one billion dollars…aah. No. You know what, let’s raise the stakes a little like they do in the movies. So get yourself out of the equation and insert someone you love DEARLY. Because we’re selfless people who love our loved ones more than we love ourselves. So replace yourself with your spouse, your mum, your dad, your brother, your sister, your child. Gun to their head, or they’ve been kidnapped, or they have one shot at winning one billion dollars. And their survival depends on you having only one chance to use one skill you’re very good at. What are you going to do?
For me, I can create beautiful captivating stories out of anything. Any footage, any images, any situations, ANYTHING! Throw me three videos and I’ll make you a feature film. Give me one picture and I’ll write a fantastic story just from it. From one line, I can weave a tale so intricate and entertaining, when it ends you’ll keep wanting more! So yes I am multipational but when it comes to it? This one thing is my superpower.
Figuring this out has helped me gain sooooo much clarity! I don’t struggle to describe myself or what I do anymore. Everything else is an interest, for passion or for work. But storytelling is the gift the good Lord bestowed on me. Now if I’m asked what I do, it will be a simple answer. I tell stories.
So, what’s your superpower? We all have one. Take time to figure out yours!
